Hand-painted Color Field painting on canvas with zipper
Gerd Leins' work, a striking color field painting measuring 230 x 160 cm, transcends classical painting by being able to be divided horizontally with a zipper. This zipper, separating the two halves of the image, transforms the painting into an interactive work of art that can exist both as a single whole and dissected into two parts. Here, the artist plays with the notion of divisibility and changeability, pointing to the complexity of human perception.
What's special about this work is that the separation created by the zipper symbolically represents the left and right hemispheres of the brain—the separation of rational and creative thinking. The horizontal line becomes the interface between the two halves, which communicate with each other not only visually but also in terms of content. Some of the halves of the image bear texts that act as a mirror image of the opposite side, leading to a new, often unexpected interpretation of the image's perception of the overall composition.
The image can be reassembled by swapping its halves—right with top, left with bottom—thus altering its meaning and effect. The horizontal element transforms into a vertical orientation, creating a new perspective and a changed perception of reality. Leins' work challenges the viewer to question the notion of reality and perception, for, in fact, reality only exists when we recognize it as such.
This interactivity and transformability of the image contains the artist's profound message: reality is relative, malleable, and dependent on the viewer's perspective. The image thus becomes a metaphor for the complexity of the human mind and perception.
