Sherin P. Spielman

Sherin P. Spielmann in the studio

" My work is a reflection of contemporary trends and a homage to beauty and diversity."

Like Alice in Wonderland in the Lewis Carroll story, artist Sherin P. Spielmann perceives the world as a universe with its own set of rules. Alice must break away from familiar ideas and values in order to understand the unknown society of Wonderland. The new experiences require openness, impartiality and curiosity. With this curiosity and impartiality, Sherin devotes herself to the beauty and diversity of being. Fashion as an expression of personality and the beautiful shell as a means of seduction, fairy tales and mythologies as a description of the archetype, eroticism and role play.

Ink and sharpened wood of different densities (balsa wood, spruce, etc.) are her preferred tools. As in the Chinese ink drawing, the application of color is spontaneous and irreversible. This technique lends the partially graphic works an unmistakable signature. For larger areas of color she uses acrylic, often in more than 10 glazing layers with different structures to give the picture more depth. As an artist, Sherin takes a stand in the current gender discussion and supports the organization intact eV, which campaigns against the circumcision of girls.

Sherin P. Spielmann studied fashion design at HAW Hamburg. After graduating, she moved to New York to study fashion illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology and life drawing at the Art Students League. For 5 years she worked as a freelance illustrator and designer in this fashion metropolis. In 1994, Sherin returned to Hamburg and founded her studio for free and applied art. Under the name Sherin L'Artiste she is known as a live artist at burlesque events and is booked as a portrait artist for events.
